James Gunn announces new “Superman” movie for 2025

“Superman: Legacy” is currently scheduled to be released in US cinemas on July 11, 2025. Gunn is writing the script. According to Safran, the planned work should not be an origin story. Rather, it should be about how Superman balances his origins from the planet Krypton with his human upbringing. An actor for the main character has not yet been determined, as has a director.

“The Brave and the Bold” is the title of a new “Batman” movie, which will see the dark avenger alongside his birth son, Damian Wayne. Raised by murderous assassins, he becomes Batman’s sidekick Robin. Gunn literally calls the character Damian Wayne a “little bugger” and promises an “odd father-son story.”

In addition, Robert Pattinson (36) will also return as Batman in “The Batman Part II”, scheduled for October 3, 2025. However, this project is not part of the new DCU, but like the “Joker” sequel “Folie à Deux” with Joaquin Phoenix (48) and Lady Gaga (36) stands alone.

The two co-heads of DC Studios have also announced the feature films “The Authority” about an anti-hero troupe, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” about a dark Supergirl and the horror film “Swamp Thing”.

“Paradise Lost”: A “Wonder Woman” series in the style of “Game of Thrones”

Gunn and Saffran have also announced numerous series projects for the HBO Max streaming service. The Paradise Lost series will be set on the Amazon-only island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s birthplace. The theme here will be political intrigues reminiscent of the HBO megaseries “Game of Thrones”.

In the series “Waller”, a spin-off of “Peacemaker”, Viola Davis (57) returns as Amanda Waller. Another series project is entitled “Lanterns”. Kept in the style of the HBO series “True Detective”, the two heroes Hal Jordan and John Stewart are the main characters here. Booster Gold is a streaming series about a future time traveler who uses futuristic technology to pretend to be a superhero. The new DCU will be launched by the seven-part animated series “Creature Commandos”, which is already in production.

The master plan for the DCU is in place

According to Gunn and Safran, two movies and two series will be released annually on the HBO Max streaming service. The plan presented relates to the next eight to ten years. “We’re going to promise that everything will be consistent from our first project,” said Gunn, who will play an analogous role to Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige (49) at DC Studios. Established actors such as Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman, 37), Jason Momoa (Aquaman, 43) and Zachary Levi (Shazam, 42) can remain in the new DCU. “There’s no reason why […] the cast playing these characters are not part of the DCU,” revealed Safran.
