New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured cruciate ligament.

The MRI examination is also said to have revealed further ligament damage.

Winston was carried off the pitch in Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being tackled by linebacker Devin White. After the game, Saint’s coach Sean Payton said the quarterback’s injury appeared to be “severe”.

The 27-year-old was a starter for New Orleans in his first season. Winston threw passes for 1,170 yards and 14 touchdowns on three interceptions.

It is currently assumed that the Saints will start with either Taysom Hill or Trevor Siemian. The team is apparently not interested in signing free agent Cam Newton.

Winston signed a one-year contract with New Orleans after serving as backup quarterback last year. He will become a free agent in the coming season.
