The 35-year-old’s first doping suspension came three years ago after old tests from the 2008 Olympics were retested with new methods. As a result, Jamaica’s 4×100 meter team lost the gold.
When Carter announced that he would retire, he said it was due to medical reasons that had prevented him from training and competing since March this year. He said that the medicine he was prescribed by a doctor was not allowed under the anti-doping regulations.
Carter has run in 9.78 seconds in the 100 meters and has an Olympic gold and three World Cup golds in the 4×100 meters, as well as a World Cup bronze individually in the 100 meters.
