Jakobsen back home after terrible crash: ‘I am grateful that I am still alive’ | NOW

Fabio Jakobsen first made himself heard on Tuesday after his terrible crash in the Tour of Poland two weeks ago. The Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider, who is currently recovering from his injuries at home, is grateful that he is still alive.

Jakobsen ended up at the finish in the opening stage of the Tour of Poland at the hands of Dylan Groenewegen in the crush barriers and sustained serious injuries. The Dutchman fought for his life in a hospital in Poland, but it is now clear that he can fully recover.

“The doctors and the carers at the finish in Katowice saved my life and I am extremely grateful to them for that,” says Jakobsen on the site from Quick-Step. “The same goes for the people in the hospital. It was a dark period for me in intensive care, where I feared that I would not survive.”

Jakobsen, who underwent a five-hour operation and was kept in a coma for two days, returned to the Netherlands last Wednesday, where he was admitted to the UMC in Leiden. The sprinter has now returned home, where he continues to recover from his facial injuries and a serious concussion.

‘I will fight to make a full recovery’

In the coming weeks and months, Jakobsen will have to undergo multiple operations and treatments to repair the injuries to his face. 23-year-old Jakobsen does not yet comment on his future in cycling.

“Step by step I can live more independently and slowly look to the future. I will fight to fully recover, but at the moment I am especially grateful that I am still alive. I would like to thank everyone for their support,” said Jakobsen .

The reigning Dutch champion on the road rode his first race in Poland since the corona crisis began. Jakobsen has won two stages in the Tour of Spain in his career.
