Jakob Johansson is forced to end his career

On Tuesday, IFK Gothenburg announced, via its website, that Jakob Johansson will be forced to end his career. The 31-year-old’s knees put a stop to continued play.

– It is a difficult decision but my major injuries have of course had difficult consequences for me in recent years. It’s a sad way to end everything, but I’m forced to. This does not come as a shock or surprise right now, but it is a decision that has emerged, says Jakob Johansson according to IFK Gothenburg’s website.

Pushed Sweden to the World Cup

The midfielder pushed Sweden to the World Cup in Russia 2018 when he scored the only goal over two playoff meetings with Italy. That luck, however, was expensive for Johansson, who suffered a knee injury in connection with the matches. Therefore, he himself was not present at the first kick of that championship.

The former national team player took a place in IFK Gothenburg’s first team as a 16-year-old and made his debut as a 17-year-old.

– Kamratgården has always felt like home to me as a football player. I am very happy that I returned and that we in the family chose to move home to the west coast.

– I am satisfied with what I have achieved as a football player, both in Blåvitt and in the national team. But of course I would have liked to achieve even more success.

“Thanks to Jakob”

Blåvitt’s sports director Pontus Farnerud is happy that Johansson chose to move back to Blåvitt after six years abroad, in Greece and France.

– I most want to say thank you to Jakob from the entire association, says the sports director.

– Jakob is everything we hope to get from a player in IFK Gothenburg. He is a professional, holds the camaraderie high and is an incredibly loyal team player.

Jakob Johansson played senior football for FC Trollhättan already in 2006, before he spent the years between 2007 and 2014 in Blåvitt. After that he went abroad for games in Greek AEK Athens and French Rennes and last year he moved back to the Gothenburg club.
