Jakob Ingebrigtsen Wins Gold at World Championships: A Turbulent Journey to Victory

BUDAPEST/STOCKHOLM. Jakob Ingrebrigtsen got his revenge and became world champion at 5,000 meters.

In the stands, fiancee Elisabeth Asserson sat and cried.

– There has been so much shit.

It has been a turbulent time for Norwegian sprint star Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

The 22-year-old missed the gold in the 1,500 meters earlier this week after being ill the week before and instead ran in second ahead of compatriot Narve Gilje Nordås. At the subsequent medal ceremony, the father Gjert Ingebrigtsen, who coaches Nordås, appeared.

Jakob and his brothers Henrik and Filip have terminated contact with their husband and had expressly asked him to stay away.

14 hundredths

Today came the Norwegian’s revenge when he won gold in the 5,000 meters.

But it was deep inside.

In the time 13:11,30 he beat Mohammed Katir by 14 hundredths after sprinting down the Spaniard the last 20 meters towards the finish.

– I mostly thought about myself. When it’s going well, it’s a good thing, when it’s going badly, you’re a fucking idiot, he told TV4 himself when asked how he dealt with the press last week.

Fästmön in tears

At the subsequent press conference, the Norwegian said that he still does not feel fully recovered from the illness.

– This week has been a bit bittersweet overall. I’m not happy about being sick, of course, I haven’t experienced that before, but this is a good way to end it all.

On Norwegian television, it was shown when fiancée Elisabeth Asserson sat and cried in the stands.

– This is the first championship and I’m just looking forward to it being over. There have been many setbacks. Not many others had managed it. To reach the top now, there is no one who deserves it more than Jakob, she says.
