- Diamond League in Brussels tonight: Jakob Ingebrigtsen runs 1500 meters at. 20.23
The postponement of the Summer Olympics in Tokyo from 2020 to 2021 will have a number of ripple effects for Norwegian athletes.
Most people probably think first and foremost of the older athletes as the most injured, such as Olaf Tufte and Stig André Berge.
But also one of the youngest, 19-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen, took the Olympic postponement very seriously when the news came.
–
Ingebrigtsen, who runs 1500 meters in the Diamond League tonight without arch-rival Timothy Cheruiyot on the starting line, turns 20 during this month, more precisely 19 September 2020.
That means he never gets to run in an Olympics as a teenager. That fact stings for Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who did not hide it in a message on Instagram to Friidrettsforbundet this spring.
– The dreams are not shattered. Just a little delayed, the Athletics Association wrote at the time.
Ingebrigtsen responded immediately:
– The dream of an Olympic medal as a teenager will always be shattered.
Ingebrigtsen deleted the message shortly after he posted it.
Jakob elaborates: – Hesitant
When Dagbladet asked the super talent what he put in the message and why he deleted it earlier this summer, he replied:
– Do I delete it? That was not the intention in that case, Jakob Ingebrigtsen introduced to Dagbladet.
– Can you elaborate on what is behind this message?
– It is hesitant when people pretend that we have such a good time, that it is not stupid and that there is always a new chance. The chances you lose will always be lost. I can never change what happened in Doha and must always live with it. I can never change that, but do well in the future, the 19-year-old points out.

The Olympics have been the big goal for Team Ingebrigtsen for a long time. Already during the planning for the World Cup in Doha in 2019, they had the Olympics on the horizon.
The three brothers Jakob, Henrik and Filip chose to run both 5000 meters and 1500 meters in the championship – despite a warning about how tough it was going to be. They wanted to bring the experience towards the big goal: the Olympics.
– I think it has been an important and good choice, he said Gjert Ingebrigtsen after the World Cup in Doha.
– Better than ever
Everything was a step towards the big Olympic goal, which was postponed for a year. Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his brothers have nevertheless managed to keep their motivation up and the wheels in motion.
– I hope I’m better than ever. There are many indications that I have taken another step in the right direction, Jakob Ingebrigtsen concluded to Dagbladet in June.
After that, the 19-year-old has received confirmation that he has done just that, ie taken new steps in the right direction.

In Monaco, Jakob Ingebrigtsen beat the European record of Mo Farrah in the 1500 meters and broke the dream limit by clocking in the super time of 3.28.68.
– It’s completely sick. You do not know what to expect, it is the first 1500 this year. But since Doha, I have not stood over a single session and trained extremely well, the 19-year-old said NRK.
It has really given results and further development for one of athletics’ most unique talents.
Also in Stockholm at the end of August, Jakob impressed a lot and showed that he has stabilized at a sky-high level with a time of 3: 30.74.
A new standard at a sky-high level has been set for Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
Philip withdrew
Only world number one Timothy Cheruiyot is stronger than the 19-year-old from Sandnes, who is entering his last days as a teenager this month.
European record
Tonight, Jakob Ingebrigtsen runs a new 1500 meters in the Diamond League. Timothy Cheruiyot is not there.
This means that the teenager from Sandnes will be the big favorite to win the 1500-meter in the Diamond League. Ingebrigtsen has run five seconds faster this year than the second fastest man on the starting line.
Jesus Gomez has run the second fastest this year with 3.33.07, while Charlie Grice has the second best personal record of 3.30.62, but has not yet shown that level in 2020.
Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen will not run tonight. Filip was originally supposed to run, but withdrew earlier this week.
– Due to a small problem in my leg, I do not run in Brussels. I hope that a few days extra recovery will get me ready for a few more races before the season is over, Filip Ingebrigtsen wrote on Instagram.
Karsten Warholm does not run in Brussels either. Neither 400 meters hurdles nor 400 meters flat for men is on the program.
