Jakarta Ranked as World’s Most Polluted City with PM 2.5 Levels 19 Times Higher than WHO Guideline

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The city of Jakarta on Sunday (13/8/2023) this morning is considered to be the number one most polluted city in the world.

This is according to data updated at 07.00 WIB in the morning on the IQAir page.

The Jakarta city air quality index this morning exceeded 172, with the main pollutant PM 2.5 and a concentration value of 96.8 micrograms per cubic meter.

“The concentration of PM 2.5 in Jakarta is currently 19.4 times the annual WHO air quality guideline value,” the website said, quoted by Kompas.com, Sunday.

In fact, Jakarta is ranked first in the world’s most polluted city this Sunday morning. Followed by the city of Kampala, Uganda, in second place with an air quality index of 164.

Then, Johannesburg in South Africa is ranked third as a polluted city with a quality of 162.

Jakarta’s air quality data was obtained from 21 contributors, one of which was the Meteorology, Climatology and Geo-Physics Agency (BMKG), Purpleair and PT Barito Pacific.

The IQAir website then recommends that people wear masks when outside, turn on air purifiers, close windows to avoid dirty air, and avoid outdoor activities.

Currently, the city of Jakarta is also recorded to have a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius with foggy weather conditions.

Then, the humidity value is 67 percent and the wind gust is 9.3 km/h. Meanwhile, wind pressure is at 1,014 millibars.
