Jakarta Faces Deadly Mpox Outbreak: WHO and CDC Issue Warnings

Jakarta

The World Health Organization (WHO) is reportedly very concerned about the spread of the deadly monkey pox disease or Mpox which has killed nearly 600 people. This deadly strain of Mpox is spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo and infecting children.

The country has reported more than 13,000 cases in 2023, twice as many as the last peak of cases in 2020, with the disease occurring in almost every province. WHO is working with authorities on the response and risk assessment related to the case

Meanwhile the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also issued a warning about the dangerous clade I mpox outbreak.

“This virus variant is known to be more virulent. If this virus adapts better to human-to-human transmission, this will pose a risk,” Rosamund Lewis, WHO mpox leader, told Reuters quoted on Sunday (10/12/2023).

Mpox is a viral infection that spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. Most cases are mild but can be deadly.

Last year, a less serious disease, Mpox clade II, began spreading globally, largely through sexual contact among men who have sex with men, and the WHO declared a public health emergency.

The new evidence that clade I can also spread through sexual contact is concerning, Lewis said. Mpox can also spread to humans through infected animals or between family members in a household, he said.

Children and people with weakened immune systems are more at risk, with the disease causing death in up to 10 percent of clade I cases.
