The acting governor of Jakarta, Heru Budi Hartono, has called for assistance from the National Development Planning Agency and the Home Affairs Ministry to deal with the influx of arrivals into Jakarta. Hartono is concerned about the growing burden newcomers pose to local authorities in terms of providing public services such as health care and education, without a plan for how these services will be funded. In particular, the governor warned that Jakarta may struggle to maintain its status as a global city if it fails to address the issue of providing long-term accommodation and jobs for newcomers. The city has already invested an estimated Rp17.1 trillion ($1.14 billion) in delivering services to low-income residents. To support planning and development of a global city, the Jakarta provincial authority is focusing on six priority issues, including flood prevention and poverty eradication.
