Former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins speaks to the media on Friday

Jaime Munguia wanted to demonstrate in his third middleweight fight, Saturday afternoon, at the Don Haskins Center.

Munguia showed that he is certainly ready for any challenge against the world’s best 160-pound fighters by dominating Pole Kamil Szeremeta when Szeremeta’s corner prevented him from leaving early in the seventh round.

After a groping process in the first round, Munguia degassed Szeremeta with slimy left hooks to the body and solid combinations to the head and face. The 6-foot Munguia used his four-inch height advantage to dominate Szeremeta.

“I’m starting to get more comfortable at 160 pounds,” Munguia said. “I feel more established with each fight.”

Munguía, who is Tijuana and a former 154-pound world champion, is now 37-0 with 30 knockouts. Szeremeta, who was a late substitute for Maciej Sulecki, falls to 21-2. His previous loss was to Gennady Golovkin for the IBF Middleweight Championship last December.

“It was a good fight for me, I was happy with my performance,” said Munguia. “I made some adjustments to what my opponent was doing. I was able to box well and also show my strength. My opponent is very tough. He struggled a lot and took some big shots. I got a good job. “

Munguia is trained by former four-time world champion Erik Morales.

“Training camp went well,” Munguia said. “I felt prepared for this fight and I am learning a lot from Erik.”

Former world champion Oscar De La Hoya, who is Munguia’s promoter, said he believes Munguia will be ready for a world title in two fights.

Munguia said earlier this week that he wants to fight for the world title before the end of the year. He also mentioned that he wouldn’t mind fighting Gabriel Rosado, who defeated Bektemir Melikuzief undefeated by KO in the third round of the co-main event.

“I want to keep working and improving,” said Munguia, who is ranked in the top 10 by the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO. “This was my first fight of the year and I want to be busy.”
