Jailed Myanmar leader to appear in court on Wednesday | NOW

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s leader imprisoned by the military junta, will remain in prison until at least Wednesday. That day she must appear in court, her lawyer Khin Maung Zaw told journalists in the Myanmar capital Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.

The lawyer initially thought that Aung San Suu Kyi had to appear in court on Monday. But the judge has informed him that the head of government will remain in pre-trial detention until at least 17 February. On Wednesday she will attend the hearing via video link.

In early February, the Myanmar army staged a coup because, according to army command, there was fraud in the elections at the end of last year. The army then lost a lot and the party of Aung San Suu Kyi won many seats.

Demonstrations have been taking place in the country since the coup. In several protests, the army has deployed tear gas and water cannons and fires have also been fired. It is not clear whether the military used rubber bullets or shot them with sharp focus.

On Sunday, the internet was shut down in the country during the protests. The four largest telecommunication networks have not been accessible since 01:00 local time. Internet traffic is now possible again.
