Jaguar F-Type: The Surprisingly Durable and Affordable Used Sports Car

The Jaguar sports car was a complete failure as new, it is all the more interesting as a cheap and surprisingly durable used car

It was supposed to be a sales hit, like a British 911, but the F-Type turned out to be nothing like that. Still, it’s a great car that, thanks to its poor reputation, can be bought used for a price that would cost you a set of carbon-ceramic brakes and studded wheels for a better 911.

As incredible as it may sound, ten years have passed since Jaguar F-Type went on sale. During that time, the British carmaker gradually expanded its portfolio, thus adding a coupe version to the range of the original roadster, and a version with four-wheel drive was also added to the rear wheel. The range of engines was also expanded, as initially it was only possible to choose between a three-liter six-cylinder and a five-liter eight-cylinder. However, a two-liter unit arrived in 2018, after which the F-Type became the first four-cylinder sports car in Jaguar history.

But none of that helped, and the car just became a bigger and bigger loser over time. Today it is really just alive and with 1,118 sales this year in Europe (Porsche 911 is 19 times better) it is not surprising that the car will end up without a direct successor. Instead, the British will offer a more expensive electric car, which sounds like a suicide attempt. After all, you just have to look at the just-published overview of the worst-selling cars in the USA. The F-Type is not missing among them, but the electric I-Pace performs the worst of the Jaguars.

If they don’t get their heads out of the seemingly impossible places at Jaguar, you only have a few months left to buy a new F-Type tailored according to a reasonable recipe. For the used one, of course, you will be able to go to bazaars in a decade. And if you go there now, you can shop really cheap. While the Porsche 911 from the same era still costs millions, the prices for the F-Type start around 650 thousand crowns. And it doesn’t matter that for this amount you can only count on cars from the beginning of production with higher mileages, the 911 is many times more expensive even in such condition. It is noteworthy, however, that despite Jaguar’s reputation, this car is not supposed to be such a “crap”, owners complain practically only about multimedia, which is slowly becoming the biggest weakness for the brand, regardless of the model. The rest passes through and only lingering disinterest cares about the decline in value.

In addition to multimedia, there are still a few areas to check – these are the differential, exhaust and windows. In the first case, there may be an oil leak due to a bad seal, in the second, the flaps of the active system may remain stuck for a change. Thirdly, the problem is caused by small stones that can get between the glass and the seal. Dealers of the brand should supply you with a new one, free of charge. As part of the warranty, the end muffler is also changed.

The next inspection already includes only the traditional inspection of upholstery, bodywork and wheels. So the F-Type really appears to be a very reliable car, which is also confirmed by colleagues from Germany. They knocked over a piece registered for the first time in August 2019. Its owner drove only 7,850 kilometers with the six-cylinder coupe tuned to 340 horsepower, but at the same time he did not miss a single prescribed service check. At the same time, he didn’t skimp on himself either, as premium Meridian audio is also available.

The price will not be a problem for potential customers. Even though we have a practically new car here, it is offered for 51,800 Euros, i.e. 1.28 million crowns. Cars after the facelift, which arrived in 2019, can be purchased even cheaper, from around 1 million CZK. You can count on them with a low mileage, but under the hood, at such a moment, you have to put up with 300 horses of the basic two-liter. As soon as you want a three-liter, you are suddenly CZK 300,000 higher. 1.5 million crowns is enough for a V8. These are nice sums for a serious sports car with respectable style and dynamics.

The F-Type does not in the least live up to Jaguar’s rather unflattering reputation as a very unreliable automaker. In addition, it looks attractive, especially its six- and eight-cylinder engines achieve impressive dynamics. Still, compared to similar cars, it’s cheap, even very cheap, although it’s definitely not cheap. Photo: Jaguar
