Around 60 militia soldiers from the Vienna 2 “Maria Theresia” hunter battalion took part in the six-day special weapons exercise “Llaubfeuer24” at the Theresian Military Academy last week. The aim of the exercise was to improve leadership skills at the different leadership levels in the “attack” type of operation.
The focus of the exercise was on the command and planning process as well as leadership in combat. In addition to theoretical training, this also included practical exercises using the latest simulation technology on the Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (CATT), a state-of-the-art system available at the Theresian Military Academy. This simulation system enabled the exercise participants to train in realistic combat scenarios in a virtual environment. The system combines 3D combat and radio simulation in order to be able to practice the interaction of different troops.

Improving leadership skills
Colonel Markus Hornof, commander of the Vienna 2 Jaeger Battalion, emphasized the importance of this exercise: “This special weapons exercise is the start of the ‘Mission Forward‘ in the Vienna 2 Jaeger Battalion to achieve defense capability, in accordance with the planned ‘Objective ÖBH2032’. The soldiers in the battalion showed a very high level of motivation and willingness to perform. They have honed and developed leadership and command skills this week.”
The militia exercise not only served to develop military skills, but also to promote camaraderie and cohesion within the battalion. Particularly important was the training of the company commanders, their deputies and the platoon commanders in the area of combat-technical leadership procedures. The battalion staff, in turn, was able to further improve staff work and coordination within the staff.
Service supervision by the Vienna military command
During the exercise, supervision was also carried out by the deputy military commander of Vienna, Colonel Leopold Schieder, and by the head of Staff Department 3 of the Vienna Military Command, which is responsible for training projects, Colonel Albert Bauer. Colonel Schieder was impressed by the organization and commitment in the Vienna 2nd Jaeger Battalion. He emphasized that the combination of civilian and military capabilities represents a particular strength and praised the effective cooperation with the Guard.
Looking into the future
The special weapons exercise “Llaubfeuer24” was a significant contribution to maintaining the battalion’s leadership ability and also served to motivate the soldiers in the spirit of the “Mission Forward”. The first step towards further development in accordance with this motto has been taken and will be continued with shooting training as part of the ordered weapons exercise in September of next year.
