After Jadon Sancho was forced to train outside Manchester United’s first team due to a “disciplinary problem”, coach Erik ten Hag said on Friday that he did not know whether the winger would play for the club again and that his team would adapt to his goals must adhere to strict rules.
Sancho claimed on social media that he had been made a “scapegoat” after being left out of United’s squad for their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal this month. He is now in a “personal training program” until the matter is resolved, United said.

Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home game against Brighton, Ten Hag was asked directly whether Sancho would put on the United jersey again. He replied, “I don’t know. I am sitting here. Tomorrow we have a big game, we are going to a new block of games, lots of games in the compressed program. That’s what I’m focusing on.”
Ten Hag added: “He’s not available, so he’s not important at the moment because he can’t contribute.”
Ten Hag, who has previously taken a tough stance following breaches by Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford, declined to elaborate on Sancho. But he made it clear that he intended to impose his authority on the club.
“The club demanded strict rules from me because there was no good culture before I joined last season,” said the Dutch coach. “Setting good standards is what I did, and it’s my job to monitor the standards.”
“Of course it’s never the case that someone just makes one mistake, it’s a whole process until you get to a certain result along strict lines. When it comes to staff or players or whoever, there is a structure that pushes boundaries, so you have to be strong.”
Ten Hag had said Sancho was left out of the Arsenal game because of his performances in training.
Sancho expressed his opinion in a post on
“I believe there are other reasons for this matter which I will not go into,” he said. “I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time, which isn’t fair!”
The Sancho situation is not the only off-field issue that has cast a shadow over United’s season. Mason Greenwood was allowed to join Getafe on loan after he and United mutually agreed to part ways six months after prosecutors concluded a criminal investigation into attempted rape. Brazilian winger Antony is currently on leave while he deals with domestic violence allegations.
Ten Hag said he had “no idea” how long Antony would be unavailable.
