Wilhelmshaven (dpa / lni) – JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven wants to work more closely with companies from China in the future and has signed two cooperation agreements for this purpose. An agreement was reached with the state port operating company Hefei International Land Port to expand container train traffic between the Chinese province of Anhui and JadeWeserPort, as the port’s marketing company announced on Monday. In mid-July the first freight train reached the freight center at the port, and last week a second train from Anhui arrived in Wilhelmshaven.
The JadeWeserPort marketing company also signed a letter of intent with one of the largest Chinese logistics companies, China Logistics, to further develop a logistics center. For this purpose, the company had already signed a leasehold contract for a 20-hectare property in the freight transport center last year. Due to the corona pandemic, however, there were recently delays in the settlement. Both contracts had already been signed on July 16.
Lower Saxony’s Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU) said that the signing of the cooperation agreements is a strong sign of mutual trust. “This is also necessary in order to establish a permanent direct train connection between the Chinese province of Anhui and the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven,” said the minister. The signing of the contracts demonstrated the competitiveness that Germany’s only deep-water container port offers.
However, the JadeWeserPort is still not fully utilized around nine years after it opened. In 2020 only 423,000 standard containers were handled; the container terminal is designed for an annual turnover of 2.7 million standard containers.
