Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which a person becomes partially bald. Circular patches form on the head, which are often round or oval. In some cases the circles grow back, but the person can also become completely bald, which is called alopecia totalis. If the armpit hair, eyelashes and pubic hair also fall out, the person suffers from alopecia universalis. Two percent of the population suffers from alopecia areata.
