Two weeks after being dismissed by the Pittsburgh Penguins along with his colleagues Mark Recchi and Sergei Gonchar, Martin agreed to join the New York Rangers as an assistant coach.
Martin will report to Rangers head coach David Quinn. The New York roster was eliminated in three games by the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference qualifying series earlier this month.
He had just spent seven seasons with the Penguins organization, including five as an assistant coach.
The decisions to fire Martin, Recchi and Gonchar came less than 24 hours after Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said changes had become necessary in order to revive the team, following his surprise four-game elimination in of the qualifying round in the Eastern Conference against the Montreal Canadiens.
Martin spent 17 career seasons on the Bettman Tour in a coaching capacity, including with the St. Louis Blues (1986-88), Ottawa Senators (1995-2004), Florida Panthers ( 2005-08) and the Canadian (2009 to 2012).
