Jacoby Brissett emerged as the number one quarterback in the offseason and will begin the season as the starter for the New England Patriots. First-round pick Drake Maye can initially learn from the bench.
“There are many factors that led to this choice,” head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters on Thursday. “I think the difficult part is thinking short-term and long-term at the same time. However, as an organization, we believe Jacoby gives us the best chance to win right now.” This also means that Brissett’s shoulder injury from the last game of the preseason does not seem to have turned out to be serious.
Brissett, 31 years old, was selected as a third-round pick by the Patriots in 2016. After stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Washington Commanders, he returned to the Patriots this offseason. Brissett has played in 79 NFL games so far, 48 of them as a starter. In his games as a starter, he led his teams to 18 victories. In total, he threw passes for 10,574 yards, 80 touchdowns and 51 interceptions. He also ran for 915 yards for 15 touchdowns himself.
