Cape Town –
Ex president south Africa (South Africa) Jacob Zuma come report for serving time in prison local government, but then immediately released again quickly because he got remission. It is the latest shock in a legal battle facing Zuma who has been charged with contempt of court.
As reported AFP, Friday (11/8/2023), Zuma was ordered to report back to the local prison, and arrived at the detention facility in Estcourt, northwestern Durban, on Friday (11/8) morning, at around 06.00 local time. There, the prison authorities said, Zuma was then “registered into the system”.
However, shortly after, Zuma was released as part of a “remission process” aimed at tackling prison overcrowding.
“After being registered into the system, he went through the administrative process. … He was later released,” the local National Commissioner for Corrections, Makgothi Thobakgale, told a press conference in Pretoria.
Zuma was sentenced in June 2021, after refusing to testify before a panel investigating financial depravity and cronyism during his presidency. But he was released on medical parole about two months after serving his sentence in prison.
Zuma began serving his sentence in early July 2021.
Zuma’s imprisonment sparked protests that turned into rioting and looting, which left more than 350 people dead in the worst violence to hit the country since the emergence of democracy in South Africa.
