The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded their backup quarterback Gardner Minshew II to the Philaldephia Eagles. As the Eagles announced, a “conditional” six-round pick will go to Florida in the 2022 draft.
Like Adam Schefter from ESPN further reported, this will become a five-round pick if Minshew completes at least 50 percent of the plays in three games in the coming season. Shortly after the trade, Philadelphia also announced the dismissal of quarterback Nick Mullens. Behind Jalen Hurts, Minshew and veteran Joe Flacco will fight for the backup role. According to insider Ian Rapoport, Flacco is one step ahead.
The trade was preceded by the declaration by Jaguars coach Urban Meyer on Wednesday that top pick Trevor Lawrence will start the season and will be on the field at the opener against the Houston Texans on September 12th.
At the training camp, Lawrence and Minshew had shared the snaps with the first guard. In two preseason games Minshew came to 196 yards (17/29) and two interceptions for Jacksonville, after his departure CJ Beathard (223 yards, 22/30, 3TD in preparation) should act as Lawrence’s top backup. Jake Luton would also be ready.
Minshew came to the Jaguars as a six-round pick in the 2019 draft, after an injury to Nick Foles he was washed into the starting lineup and triggered a Minshew mania with initially strong performances. After Foles’ return, he moved back on the bench, but reopened the following season after his departure as a starter. In nine games he was unable to change the ultimately catastrophic season (1-15). Over his career he stands at 37 TD and eleven INT at 5,530 yards.
