Jack Sonni, known as Dire Straits’ ‘other’ guitarist, has died at 68. However, the cause of death has not yet been revealed. Only last Monday it was announced that Sonni would not be able to play at the concerts due to health problems. It was the British band that announced the disappearance of their colleague with a post published on social profiles both on X (twitter) and Facebook but also on the group’s website: “Our beloved Jack has left a void in our hearts and souls … We will miss you so much, but you will always be with us,” it reads.”
“Sadly learn of Jack Sonni’s passing, loved having him with us on Brothers in Arms tour, fond memories. RIP Jack,” writes John Illsey posting a photo of Sonni and Knopfler. Many messages from fans and colleagues, who have chosen to remember the musician in turn: “It is with a heavy heart that I must communicate that my friend and colleague from Dire Straits has left us. Rest in peace, amigo” were the words of keyboardist Alan Clark. Sonni was born in Indiana in December 1954 and later studied at the Conservatory. Once he moved to New York, around the end of the seventies, he had founded the band The Leisure Class. In 1978, while working in a music store, he had met David and Mark Knopfler, with whom he later became friends.
After collaborating with Dire Straits for records and tours, the American musician had then worked with manufacturers of musical instruments and accessories and, later, had also embarked on a career as a writer. In recent years he had returned to play with the original band.
On May 13, 1985 “Brothers In Arms” was released. Dire Straits’ fifth album became the British band’s most commercially successful and one of the best-selling albums in rock history. Five singles were released from the disc over the course of a year, including the hits “Walk Of Life”, “Money For Nothing” and the title track. The success of the songs was also thanks to the video clips that have become iconic.
The album won a Grammy in 1986 and a Brit Award the following year, spending 14 weeks at number one in the UK, nine in the US and selling over 30 million copies worldwide.
