Kehler, who was born in Philadelphia in 1946, began his career at the theater. He moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s. He got his first small film role in the sci-fi Strange Invaders, but made a living mainly as a television actor, for example in the series Hill Street Blues, Fresno, Cagney & Lacey and St. Elsewhere.

During the ninth decade, he managed to penetrate well-known films such as Wyatt Earp and Water World. The biggest cult came in 1998, when he was able to play the landlord in the Coen brothers’ comedy The Big Lebowski. There, Jeff Bridges portrayed the unforgettable character of the slacker Dud, who rented a modest apartment from him.
