Jack Draper: \”We need VAR technology in tennis\” | Eulerpool News

British tennis star Jack Draper has revealed that he spent four days thinking non-stop about the controversial ending to his win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in Cincinnati. Draper expressed dismay at the integrity being questioned following the incident. On match point, Auger-Aliassime hit a return shot which Draper lifted over the net. Umpire Greg Allensworth ruled the shot legal, although video replays later showed the ball touched the ground. Draper admitted at a press conference ahead of the US Open that the video clearly proves the shot was illegal. However, in the heat of the moment he did not realise this. He immediately looked at the umpire, but the action happened in a split second. Draper stated that he would have replayed the point had video technology been available. In Cincinnati this option was not available, but in New York the technology will be used in 75 percent of singles matches from August 26. Draper’s 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory shows his resilience, but he is still hurt by the criticism that follows. Draper can understand why people express doubts about him. He stresses that honesty and good character are more important to him than tennis. Negative comments that label him a cheater and a liar are painful. Draper praised Auger-Aliassime for his handling of the incident and explained that the Canadian had every reason to feel wronged. Draper also defended referee Allensworth, saying it is difficult to make such decisions in real time. According to Draper, the incident highlights the need for VAR technology to ensure fairness in tennis. Draper also spoke about the absence of his compatriot and mentor Andy Murray, whom he sees as an inspiration and whose retirement leaves a gap. Draper joked that the absence of Murray’s “stinky shoes” in the locker room was at least a small advantage. Draper also confirmed that he is parting ways with his coach Wayne Ferreira after four months of working together. Draper, seeded 25th, will face Zhang Zhizhen on Tuesday at the US Open.
