Jabari Brisport, hailed as ‘the next AOC’, became the very first person LGBT + black elected to the New York State legislature.
Gay, democratic socialist, third-generation public and West Indian school teacher, Jabari Brisport became the New York State Senator representing Brooklyn’s 25th District.
He ran unopposed on Nov. 3, after defeating Jason Salmon and congressman Tremaine Wright in the Democratic state primary.
He has been called “the next Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez”, who supported him in his run alongside Bernie Sanders.
According to the LGBTQ Victory Fund, Brisport joined Shevrin Jones in Florida to become one of only two openly LGBT + black men sitting in U.S. state senates.

Jabari Brisport’s platform is focused on affordable and equal health care, housing and education for all Americans.

He supports a single-payer healthcare system and said, “I will fight for health measures that have a particular impact on LGBTQ + people… I will be the first openly queer, black member of the state legislature. , and fight for my LGBTQ + siblings for expanding access to PReP and other HIV treatments, hormones and other gender-affirming health care for transgender and non-binary people , and mental health care.
