Match report as Bruno Fernandes scores twice in Portugal’s last warm-up match for Euro 2020 in Lisbon; The European champions will start their title defense against Hungary in Group F on Tuesday
Bruno Fernandes scored twice while Cristiano Ronaldo was also on track as Portugal grabbed a 4-0 home win over Israel on Wednesday as the holders warmed up for the European Championship with a dominant performance.
Portugal had full control over an empty Jose Alvalade stadium and it was only a matter of time before they took the advantage in the 42nd minute as Joao Cancelo descended to the right flank and found Fernandes, who got into the net with just one touch.
The Manchester United midfielder then became the supplier of Portugal’s second goal two minutes later feeding Ronaldo and the captain opted for power over setting when it came to shooting as his strike proved too much. for Israeli goalkeeper Ofir Marciano.
It was Ronaldo’s 104th goal for Portugal and took him five goals off former Iranian striker Ali Daei’s record as the all-time top scorer in international football.
Portugal continued to set the pace in the second half and should have increased their lead when Bernardo Silva came face to face with Marciano in the box, but failed to beat the keeper, who was made tall and recovered his shot.

Fernando Santos’ side finally scored another goal in the 86th minute thanks to a brilliant moment from Cancelo, who cut the inside of the right wing to wrap the ball in the far corner with his foot left.
Fernandes then capped a confident individual performance with an impressive solo strike in added time, unleashing a shot from outside the box that exploded in the top corner.
The defending champions begin their defense of the tournament against Hungary in Budapest on June 15 in Group F which also includes Germany and France, winners of the 2014 and 2018 World Cups respectively.
Euro 2020 will start on Friday 11 June – just 19 days after the end of the 2020/21 Premier League season – and run until Sunday 11 July.
The 2021/22 Premier League campaign kicks off on the weekend of Saturday, August 14, 34 days after the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
Clubs will be able to start planning for the new term when top-level matches are released at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, but transfer activities can begin in earnest before that date, with the summer transfer window now open.
The 2021/22 championship season begins a week before the high-level one on the weekend of Saturday, August 7. All Sky Bet EFL matches will be announced at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 24.
