JA News – Gustavo Kuerten says Roger Federer’s decision to step down from RG was “wise”, hopes Switzerland will win Wimbledon – Journal d’Afrique

Gustavo Kuerten backed Roger Federer’s decision to withdraw from Roland Garros, saying the Swiss made a “wise” decision.

Federer withdrew from Roland Garros on Sunday, a day after winning his third round match against Dominik Koepfer. The 39-year-old, after retiring, said he needed to protect his body ahead of the grass season.

Federer has been criticized by parts of the tennis community who have suggested that the world number 8 has acted disrespectfully towards the tournament.

But Gustavo Kuerten, three-time champion in Paris, believes Roger Federer was right to withdraw and that the decision will benefit his career in the long run.

Kuerten admitted that Roger Federer’s best shot to win another Major is at Wimbledon. The Brazilian has said he hopes to see Federer win a ninth Wimbledon title as he doesn’t want Switzerland’s heart-wrenching loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2019 final to be his last big slam moment.

Gustavo Kuerten has also claimed that Federer will likely retire the day he stops believing he can win another Grand Slam. The 44-year-old has said he would like to see the Swiss end his career on a high like Pete Sampras did after winning his 14th and final Major at the US Open in 2002.
