The writer J. K. Rowling announced that she will not forgive the actors involved in the adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series, even if they apologize after supporting transgender people, reported PA Media/DPA. She criticized Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson for using different platforms to welcome transgender people. The actors announced their support after Rowling spoke out against gender reassignment, DPA notes.
The writer’s statement comes in response to a report by Dr. Hilary Kass, according to which there is a lack of sufficient research and evidence on the effect of the use of hormones and other means used in gender reassignment in children.
Rowling, who lives in Scotland, wrote back to an X post suggesting that Radcliffe and Watson would feel better knowing they would receive a pardon: “Celebrities who put at risk what the women’s rights movement has achieved and use their platforms to welcome gender reassignment in children, can keep their apologies for traumatized people and vulnerable women,” Rowling wrote.
The former Prime Minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson is among the defenders of J. K. Rowling, calling her a “modern saint” at a Conservative conference in Canada this week. According to him, most people agree with the views of the author of “Harry Potter”.

Since 2019, Rowling has come under fire for her views on transgender people, including from her fans. In June 2020, Radcliffe, who starred in the eight Harry Potter films, issued a statement through an LGBT anti-suicide organization for transgender people, saying that “transgender women are women and any different claim destroys identity and dignity”. Radcliffe also said that Rowling was “undoubtedly” responsible for her behavior. In November 2022, Radcliffe announced that he had met many trans children who identified with Harry Potter.
Emma Watson, who played the role of Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the same series, as well as Eddie Redmayne, who starred in the Fantastic Beasts series based on Rowling’s works, also spoke about the topic during this period.
Watson wrote a series of posts on X in June 2020. “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned and told they are not who they say they are.” , one of Watson’s posts read.
JK Rowling, because of whom Harry Potter came out of the closet and enchanted the world
“JK Rowling is perhaps the person who has most encouraged young people around the world to read,” Boris Johnson commented on Wednesday this week. According to him, the writer was “demonized”. “And by the way, what she says about transgender people is what 95% of the population secretly thinks,” he added.
Earlier this month, Rowling appealed to Scottish police to arrest her for hate speech. I’m not in the country, but if I wrote something that goes against the new hate law, you might arrest me when I come back, the writer said. The police announced that no action was taken against the author of “Harry Potter”, DPA recalls.
