The J-35A is intended to be a competitor to the American F-35A, but with a different choice of configuration in the propulsion system. As the Chinese do not have the technological capability to produce an engine with the power of Pratt & Whitney’s F-135 that the F-35 has, they have equipped the J-35 with two, type Guizhou WS-13 of 21,000 pounds of thrust (while later receiving a more enhanced version of them).
