Izera. The expert believes that the assumptions for the production of the Polish e-car are unrealistic

Instead of in mines, power plants are to invest in the production of e-cars in Silesia. The miners dismissed from work would probably find work there. However, the WSB expert does not leave a thread on the project. Tesla indicates that the production of 100 thousand. cars per year reached 13 years and Polish assumptions are too optimistic.

  • Tesla started mass production after 13 years of existence, it would take Polish Electromobility Poland seven years
  • The economist of WSB University believes that the assumptions are too optimistic and it would be better to buy a ready-made car license, as was the case with “Polish Fiat”
  • He believes that the installment payment system is a good idea, but the lack of fast chargers may be a barrier

At the end of July, ElectroMobility Poland (EMP) officially presented two prototypes of Polish electric cars (SUV and hatchback) of the newly created Polish brand Izera. President Piotr Zaremba wants the first copies rolled off the production line in the third quarter of 2023. At the turn of the second and third quarter of 2021, a factory and a production line are to be built. The plant is to be located in Silesia.

The program is estimated at PLN 4-5 billion, of which the cost of building prototypes does not exceed 1 percent. the entire budget. Shareholders, i.e. state-owned energy companies: PGE, Tauron, Enea and Energa, have so far invested a total of PLN 70 million in the company. Each has 25 percent. share.

At the end of 2019, ElectroMobility Poland SA generated a loss of PLN 4.3 million, and had PLN 38 million in cash on the account.

Miners for the production of e-cars?

Silesia is probably not a random location, as the government is trying to close unprofitable mines there. – This is unfortunately a hard necessity in view of what is happening around Poland – Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin spoke recently.

Currently, 76 thousand people work in the mining industry in Poland. people, of which 42 thousand. in the Silesian Polish Mining Group. 3.5 thousand people would find employment in the factory producing Izera. people, and around the plant it is estimated that 12,000 jobs will be needed. people.

In 2016-2019, state-owned companies lectured on investments in PGG mines, and mainly energy companies. PGE, Energa, Enea, PGNiG, Węglokoks and TF Silesia have invested a total of PLN 4.3 billion. Tauron invested PLN 1.2 billion in investments in its mines.

Instead of putting a lot of money on the mines whose future is currently in question, the power plants would build a factory of Polish e-cars, which are now treated as the future of the automotive industry. Małgorzata Królak, program director at ElectroMobility Poland has already indicated that talks are held with new potential shareholders, and power plants alone will not bear the investment.

The only question is does it make business sense? Jacek Karcz, an economist from WSB University, has doubts about it.

Tesla has waited 13 years

– Looking at the design of the Polish car from the development perspective, this the idea is absolutely right, but we are getting down to it from the wrong side – believes the economist.

According to Karcz, a better solution from a business point of view would be to start the adventure with domestic e-car production in Poland by assembling a ready-made model under a license. – As was the case with the license from Fiat and the production of cars under the “Polish Fiat” brand – he pointed out.

– On the one hand, it would save time, money and energy for building an electric car from scratch, which is very expensive, on the other, it would give the opportunity to learn and develop new technologies that already exist, and not to create them from scratch – he explained. As he said, the point is that do not pry open doors.

According to the economist, the assumed date and costs of starting production and its planned volume also seem unrealistic.

– Just compare the situation Tesla brand, which started operating in 2003. Tesla created the first car in cooperation with an experienced manufacturer of exclusive sports cars, mentioned above the level of 100 thousand cars annually reached around 2016, that is after 12-13 years of existence – pointed out Karcz.

He added that it was only in 2020 that Tesla exceeded the ceiling of 1 million cars produced. Electromobility Poland has existed since 2016, and only after four years, it showed prototypes of two vehicles.

The technical integrator of the Electromobility Poland project was the German company EDAG Engineering, which cooperates with many world-renowned car manufacturers and has its offices in Poland. The Italian company Torino Design is responsible for the appearance of the new cars, and the project consultant is Tadeusz Jelec, a long-time designer of Jaguar cars.

Not enough chargers

According to the WSB economist, the information from the head of the EMP, Fr. the planned form of Izera sales is very encouraging. Izera will be sold in an affordable installment plan for the “average Kowalski”, in which the price of the car and fuel (in this case electricity) will be included in the monthly installment, and the the installment for the e-car will be lower than for internal combustion cars of the same segment. According to Jacek Karcz however, it may not be enough to convince Poles to buy a car massively.

According to him, in Poland we have a problem with the mentality when it comes to electrification of vehicles, which results from a very limited offer of charging infrastructure. He indicated that for the development of electromobility in Poland, and with it the Polish brand of e-cars, it is necessary easily accessible charging infrastructure.

– As long as it is not expanded to such an extent that drivers can easily and efficiently charge the batteries during, for example, a holiday trip to the seaside, the reluctance to buy electricians will not disappear – he assessed.

According to the data from the last “electromobility meter”, there are 1,224 publicly accessible charging stations for electric vehicles in Poland (2,319 points), of which only 33 percent of them are fast charging stations direct current (DC) and 67 percent. slow AC chargers with a power less than or equal to 22 kW.

DC stations allow you to replenish the energy reserves in the battery in 80 percent. (optimal level for batteries) in just 30 minutes – according to Electromobility Poland. According to the company, participation in the power plant project ensures that creation of a nationwide network of chargers. At the same time, the experience of other countries shows that owners usually load their cars on their own at night, which is all the more advantageous for power plants because they have excess capacity at this time.
