Since their mother’s death, Lander regularly donned his hiking boots to commemorate her. This year he would walk from France to Santiago de Compostela on Saturday 9 July, calculated on the date of their mother’s death. “Friday evening he announced via Facebook that he had suffered a sunstroke, but at the time no one took it seriously,” Iwein says. “After that, his condition deteriorated rapidly. The next morning he woke up with a fever that wouldn’t go down. He wanted to continue walking himself, but the local innkeeper called for a doctor anyway. The doctor also failed to do anything about his condition. So he called an ambulance and Lander was rushed to the hospital by helicopter, but all help arrived too late. His organs fell out one by one. He eventually died on Saturday afternoon after a short stay in intensive care.”

The Segers family only found out a day later that something was wrong. “I knew immediately what was going on when my father called me unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon. I had just arrived in Bruges for the Cactus festival, but immediately jumped in my car and drove to Overijse. I don’t remember much about that ride. In those first days I could hardly believe that my brother was no longer there. I was very anxious and had the feeling that everything would collapse. In the meantime, I was convinced that his death must have had some other cause, but after conversations with doctors it became clear that it was effectively as stupid as it was in the newspapers.”
