Iwao Hakamada regains voting rights for first time in 44 years after acquittal | NHK

Iwao Hakamada (88) was found not guilty on appeal in the Shizuoka District Court, and was released from death row, 58 years after his arrest.

According to the defense team, on the 9th, the Shizuoka District Public Prosecutor’s Office notified Hakamada’s home local government of the decision to revoke his right to vote, and the local government also notified Hamamatsu City, where Hakamada lives.

On the 11th, Hakamada’s sister Hideko (91), who lives with her, contacted Hamamatsu City and was told that her right to vote had been restored.

Mr Hakamada lost his right to vote under the Public Offices Election Law in 1980, when he was sentenced to death, but this marks the first time in 44 years that his right to vote has been regained.
