Strasbourg, 2November 2, 2023 – “Recently, in the Bulgarian political debate, the concept of “Europe” has been replaced by “Euro-Atlanticism”. In the name of Euro-Atlanticism, Bulgaria gave up a long-term contract for the supply of gas, while Europe continues to import Russian gas.”
Ivo Hristov, a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), stated this in his speech in the plenary hall of the European Parliament. The “This is Europe” debate took place in Strasbourg, in which Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov participated.
“In the name of Euro-Atlanticism and contrary to the Copenhagen criteria, Bulgaria gave way to the ambitions of Skopje to join the Union. Meanwhile, the Bulgarians in North Macedonia are still being persecuted, with no reaction from Brussels.
In the name of Euro-Atlanticism, Bulgaria is about to give up the derogation for the import of Russian oil”, Ivo Hristov also pointed out.
The MEP also said: “European companies were neglected in the competitions for rearming the army. In the name of Euro-Atlanticism, the fight against corruption was abandoned and the current ruling coalition was created.”
In his words, meanwhile, the Schengen doors remain closed to Bulgaria, the Recovery and Sustainability Plan is slipping, and Bulgarians are increasingly refusing to vote.
“Mr. Prime Minister, I think it is urgent to clarify the concepts and goals of your government, in the hope that in next year’s European Parliament elections the Bulgarians will still find some sense in going to the polls,” said the MEP, addressing Prime Minister Denkov .
