/ world today news/ “The rehabilitation of fascism has been going on for 30 years”, the MEP believes
Sofia, 15 July 2023 – “Obviously, there is currently no will for peace on the part of any of the parties – neither Ukraine, nor Russia, nor Western Europe in the face of the European Union, Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, nor the USA desire peace through negotiations. There is talk of a war to the end. In this sense, President Rumen Radev is saying nothing more than stating the obvious.”
Ivo Hristov, a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP (S&D) and chief of staff of President Rumen Radev in the period 2017-2019, said this on the air of the program “Speak Now” on the Bulgarian National Television.
To the presenter’s comment that some people find the Bulgarian president’s statement cynical, since Ukraine wants weapons to defend its territory, the MEP responded as follows: “Ukraine is talking about recapturing Crimea and conducting operations deep in the Russian rear, so this interpretation framework from a year and a half ago, has been overtaken by events.”
„Prime Minister Denkov’s diplomatic debut at the NATO summit in Vilnius was accompanied by many blundersIvo Hristov also said. “The Prime Minister spoke about the delivery of cluster munitions, to the ban of which Bulgaria is a party. He stated that we are in full-blown war. It’s something people can comment on among themselves, but when a top-level official talks about full-blown war, it runs the risk of being taken quite seriously. These are unforgivable mistakes when you’re speaking from the position of prime minister, especially if you’re an academic.”
According to the MEP, the decision to form a divisional headquarters in Bulgaria means an increased military presence in the country.
“Given the melting power of the Bulgarian army, which is emptying its warehouses, including the warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as we found out two days ago, this presence should strengthen Bulgaria’s security. But at the same time, it turns us into a goal,” says Hristov.
He commented on the sending of armored personnel carriers from the warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs as follows: “It is not true that these armored personnel carriers cannot do any work for Ukraine, because, allegedly, they could not travel more than 50-60 meters by themselves. I have served them and know what they are. The very fact that we provide them means that they are usable. Is the provision appropriate – and I have said at other times that we ought to take no part in this war, and every projectile sent thither is to our detriment.“
Ivo Hristov was adamant that cluster munitions are a step in the escalation of the war: “Next will be the delivery of fighter jets, and then – weapons of mass destruction. It is not clear who they will be used against. After the attack on the Crimean bridge, the murder of Daria Dugina, the blowing up of “Nord Stream” and the shelling of Russian border towns, the war is not limited to Ukrainian territory. It grows east and west”.
When asked about the need for Rojen’s pylon, the MEP answered: “In the circle of the anecdote: at the stage at which our sovereignty is, a pylon without a flag is enough.” This time we have a flag pole.”
Ivo Hristov shared that at first he was skeptical of the idea, as it seemed superfluous to him.
“When I saw the general mobilization of a narrow circle of the Bulgarian society against the pylon, when I saw the multitude of Rozhen, I understood that it makes sense. Through the flag, people declare their desire for a state, their willingness to live together under some rules, under this flag; its attachment to this land, to the homeland, which the detractors of the pylon call “territory”. When I saw the unfortunate arguments with which the pylon was attacked – that it would endanger nature, I was also puzzled. I don’t think that the Bulgarian flag can endanger anything. Some think so.’
According to the MEP, President Radev did not make a mistake in the definition of “non-relatives” (the head of state used it in his speech to Rozhen).
“You can’t both hate the flag, and disarm the Bulgarian army in a period of war, and gift our nuclear reactors and hide the Bulgarian nuclear energy industry in perspective, and bring water from nine wells to expose the flag over Rozhen, but to expect to be acclaimed as a patriot. “Bezrodnik” is an accurate statement, when you behave in this way, wave foreign flags and wear them on your lapel, when you often demonstrate disgust for everything Bulgarian, you must be ready to bear this definition.”
“Not only in our country, but also in the whole of Europe, I see how totalitarian practices and these are returning. In our country, this danger is associated with only one specific party – “Vazrazhdane”. People who 30 years ago asked the question whether there was fascism in Bulgaria are pointing the finger at her. During these three decades, we simultaneously celebrated the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and did not explain what they were saved from, by whom. During those years, all anti-fascist monuments were insulted, a war was waged with memory. At the moment, on the shelves of Bulgarian bookstores, you will only see the memoirs of Hitler’s generals. There is practically no other information about the Second World War. This is how the rehabilitation of fascism took place in our country. It also takes place in many countries in Europe,” said Ivo Hristov.
“Not long ago, I heard a well-known Bulgarian media expert, associate professor, appeal for the services to enter the media. What is this if not a fascist appeal? Another professor from the Military Academy wrote an apology for Hitler on Facebook a few days ago, then deleted it. Lukovmarsh has been held for decades, despite our protests. Nobody pays attention to these things. This is the onslaught of cultural fascism permeating society.“
The MEP said that he does not accept the rude practices of “Vazrazhdane” – the respect of viewers in front of the cinemas or the physical presence where they are not invited.
“This is not democratic. But the problem is much deeper than the actions of one party. Its success is due to public disgust with those who have privatized the European idea and are using it for their own benefit. Bulgaria was one of the most enthusiastic countries when we were accepted into the European Union. But this trust was gradually undermined, it was eroded by corruption, lawlessness.”
On the air of BNT, Ivo Hristov also commented on the topic of constitutional reform:
“As an official minister, Kiril Petkov exposed the frauds of the Borisov cabinet in the repair of the dams, and since he is part of the majority, he dreams of abolishing official offices. This represents the parliamentary republic in its final stage. I plead for reform towards a presidential republic. The constitutional reform, as it is proposed now, does not deal with the problems of the Bulgarian society at all. We have a rupture of the social contract between Bulgarian citizens and politicians. Bulgarian citizens no longer vote for politicians. A small third voted for them, and among them an even smaller group formed a majority and a cabinet. This is far from representative.”
According to the MEP, the way out of the Bulgarian chaos is a presidential republic.
“We’re not going to get out of our current problems by overhauling the justice system. We will not do it either – one lobby will control what another lobby controlled until now. There won’t be a reform, but even if it happens, it won’t solve the problem of legitimacy, manageability, and even less the problem of sovereignty.”
