Strasbourg, 17 April 2023. – “Many joked until recently that Russia is a gas station with nuclear missiles. It sounded witty. Today, China fills up at the Russian gas station, and we are left with the threat of missiles.”
Ivo Hristov, a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP (S&D), stated this in his speech in the plenary hall. The European Parliament holds its regular session in Strasbourg.
“This is the result of our strategic short-sightedness and the lack of will for Europe to play its role in global politics,” said the Bulgarian MEP.
In his words, Europe is a culture, a social model and equality, and today it is stretched between the poles of Euro-Atlanticism and the new geopolitical ambitions of the East.
“It is an illusion to think that in the new world we will preserve European freedom and prosperity under a foreign umbrella. Our democracy and our economy are already degrading,” believes Hristov.
“I consider the debate on Europe’s strategic autonomy urgent. It is overdue but necessary. The challenge is: to balance our allied relations with the USA, to establish a productive dialogue with China and to offer our own, European initiative for a way out of the war in Ukraine”, concluded Ivo Hristov’s speech.
