Bulgaria on the Brink: Former Official Calls for Systemic Overhaul
Former European Parliament member and one-time chief of staff to Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Ivo Hristov, has issued a stark warning about the state of Bulgarian politics.
"It is astonishing to me that both citizens and the political class refuse to acknowledge the obvious: the mechanisms of the state no longer work," Hristov declared in an interview with the Bulgarian news outlet "Focus."
He believes a constitutional overhaul is urgently needed, shifting Bulgaria from its current parliamentary republic to a presidential one. Hristov argues that after numerous failed elections, Bulgaria must break free from its political gridlock and make bold changes.
“We’re hitting a standstill," Hristov warns. “The social crisis is escalating, security concerns are growing, and a multitude of problems are piling up, threatening to erupt into public unrest in the coming months. "
Hristov points to the Bulgarian president as the sole remaining figure of trust within the political system. He laments the breakdown of dialogue between parties and criticizes the parliament for failing in its duties.
“The Bulgarian parliament isn’t fulfilling its functions; it’s dragging society down with its behavior," Hristov states.
“The language used on its floor, the absence of any principles in negotiations, and the disregard for fundamental societal values are deeply troubling.”
Hristov predicts that the upcoming eighth round of snap elections will further weaken and discredit political parties.
“The concerning aspect is that when the social contract is so severely broken, reforming the system becomes impossible," he explains.
“To reform a failed system, decisions must be made within its existing framework. But those mechanisms are defunct. Most likely, change will occur through external pressure – either from public outcry or from international developments.”
Despite his pessimistic outlook, Hristov sees a sliver of hope in the left-wing parties’ attempt to unite.
"Revival comes through unity," he says. “However, we’ve seen a rather mechanical merging of fragments of the once-powerful Socialist Party. This isn’t enough. A true revival requires ideological and personnel renewal.”
