Studies that mention Ivermectin effective for medicine Covid-19 withdrawn from scientific journals due to ethical concerns. This study is often the basis for the use of Ivermectin for Covid-19 in a number of countries.
The study on the effectiveness of Ivermectin for Covid-19 with the title Efficacy and Safety of Ivermectin for Treatment and prophylaxis of COVID-19 Pandemic was withdrawn from the scientific journal Research Square on Thursday (15/6).
The study led by Dr Ahmed Elgazzar from Benha University, Egypt was previously published in November 2020
“Research Square has withdrawn this preprint study,” the editorial notes Research Square on their official page.
Research Square has not provided an explanation for the study’s withdrawal from their journal. However, quoted from The Guardian, ethical issues were allegedly the cause of the study being withdrawn from scientific journals.
Since this study was published, experts have found many irregularities in the methods used during the study. In scientific studies, methods are important to get accurate results.
The Ivermectin study using a randomized control method found that Covid-19 patients who were hospitalized and received Ivermectin early recovered. The use of Ivermectin is also said to reduce the mortality rate by 90 percent. The results of this study have been questioned.
London graduate medical student Jack Lawrence found the introduction to the paper almost entirely plagiarized. Some paragraphs are written from press releases and others from websites.
In addition, Lawrence also found the Ivermectin study used data that contradicted scientific research protocols. Lawrence found a lot of data that did not match the raw data.
“The authors claim to have conducted the study only at the age of 18-80 years, but at least three patients in the data set were under 18 years of age. The authors also claim they conducted the study between June 8 and September 20, 2020, but most of the patients who died were treated in hospital and died before June 8 according to raw data,” Lawrence said.
Epidemiologist from Australia’s University of Wollongong, Gideon Meyerowitz-Katz, also produced a comprehensive document revealing the many data errors of the Ivermectin study.
Ivermectin is a drug used to kill parasites such as worms and head lice. This drug has been widely used and marketed for Covid-19 in Indonesia, although there is no official permit yet. The Indonesian Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has not yet issued a permit to use Ivermectin as a Covid-19 drug.
WHO and a number of institutions such as the CDC and FDA have also not given permission to use Ivermectin to treat Covid-19.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) indiscriminate use of Ivermectin without a doctor’s supervision can be fatal. Meanwhile, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Ivermectin is a drug to treat parasitic worm infections. The use of this drug is very specific in referring to infections caused by certain worms.
