According to Delphi, the cinematographic study of Brasa Prison and its inhabitants has been nominated for the Greater Kristaps Awards in three categories, including “Best Feature Documentary”.

Documentary “Unseen, Brasa!” researching the modern prison environment shortly before the closure of Brasa Prison, all the staff and prisoners seen in the film were filmed in the last months of the prison’s operation. The upcoming changes were not only an interesting moment for filming, they made the making of a film possible at all – in a hitherto tightly closed institution. Ivars Zviedris was able to move and film relatively freely. The director focuses not only on people, but on the building itself – it seems that the narrow corridors of the institution built in 1905, the heavy doors, the described walls, everything is imbued with what can already be called history.

“The film” On the unseen, Brasa! “Is my two-month adventure in Brasa Prison before it closed.

During the filming, the documentary filmmaker met and talked with the prisoners, although the beginning was not easy in a completely unfamiliar, specific environment. However, over time, the director developed friendly relations with some prisoners, and Andris, the protagonist of the film, openly talks about the unwritten laws that still prevail in Latvian prisons.

In the film, the viewer also gets to know other prisoners, their life stories and life, learns life plans after release. One of the main lines of the film is the encounter of the old prison customs with the new European traditions. Something needs to change – prisoners will be transferred to places that meet the requirements of the residence, new words will now enter the world of hodkas, socks and schmons – integration, adaptation, modernization. It should be noted that the film, of course, contains non-normative vocabulary, so the recommended age limit for viewers is 12+.

The film’s producer Guntis Trekteris says: “Ivars Zviedris once again demonstrates his talent as a true documentary filmmaker – his ability to identify a unique situation, get where others would find it impossible, and achieve a high degree of trust and openness, revealing both cross-cutting social and borderline films. in the lives of heroes. “

The film will premiere on February 25 at the Splendid Palace cinema, where it will be shown in separate screenings, the closest of which will be on February 27 at 3 p.m.

Movie Unseen, Brasa! created by director Ivars Zviedris, cameraman Haralds Ozols, editing director Inese Kļava, sound director Ģirts Bišs, screenwriter Jānis Joņevs.
