Born Ivana Zelnickova in what was then Czechoslovakia, 73-year-old Ivana was found dead in her Manhattan home. According to media reports, the New York Police Department had received a distress call. When the police arrived, she was unconscious and unresponsive.
Her body was reportedly found in the immediate vicinity of a staircase. A criminal cause is excluded.
Ivana was Donald Trump’s first wife. They married in 1977 and had three children together – Ivanka, Eric and Donald Jr. – and ten grandchildren. In 1992 the couple divorced. That divorce, which followed Donald Trump’s much-discussed affair with Marla Maples, whom he later married, was fodder for the American tabloids. The New York judge ruled that “cruel and inhumane treatment” by Donald Trump was sufficient reason to approve Ivana Trump’s divorce petition.
Later, Ivana married two more times. Before her marriage to Trump, she was married to an Austrian for a few years, according to her biographer mainly to obtain Austrian nationality.
“Our mother was an incredible woman, a strong entrepreneur, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty and a caring mother and friend,” the family said in a statement shortly after her death. “Ivana Trump was a survivor. She fled communism and embraced this country. She taught her children perseverance, toughness, compassion and determination.”
Former President Donald Trump said he will remember Ivana as a “fantastic, beautiful and wonderful woman who lived a good and inspiring life.”
