Shock for Ivan Perisic and her Tracks. The former Bundesliga star suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training and is threatening to miss the rest of the season.
The Croatian has had a good start to the season under Ange Postecoglou, even though he has only appeared as a substitute in all five Premier League games so far. He set up Richarlison’s late equalizer in the 2-1 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.
Perisic’s season is likely over after a “complex” cruciate ligament injury, Tottenham have confirmed.
A Spurs statement said: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The experienced Croatian international sustained the injury during training without physical contact and will undergo surgery. We wish you a speedy recovery soon, Ivan.
Perisic moved from Inter to Tottenham on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. In his first season in England, he recorded twelve assists across all competitions and was mainly used as a full-back in front of a three-man chain. Since the new Spurs coach Postecoglou relies on a 4-3-3 system, Perisic was used as a winger again.
Perisic’s contract with Spurs expires at the end of the season and it is unlikely he will be able to make a comeback before his contract expires. For the 34-year-old, this means his future is more open than ever. And his participation in the European Championships in Germany is also likely to be at great risk.
