“Good evening everyone. I am your… next coach. Today we will have our first meeting and training and from tomorrow we will say more about both our own way of playing and about our next opponent.
It is my first time dealing with a national team, that is, being a selector and less a coach in terms of everyday life. But it’s something I really want and I think I can help you. You are a good generation, with plenty of talent and all of you playing in great teams. Completion, however, for each player comes through the National Team and through major competitions. It’s different to have only the fans of your teams talking about you and different to have EVERYONE by your side. You deserved to go to the Europeans, it eluded us, but now we have the chance for something even bigger. I just want positive thinking, that it’s done – it’s done and there’s no going back, even though we came so close.
I know very well what National means. While I was at Panathinaikos, I saw how anxious the children were to be called to the National Team and how proud they felt when that happened. As everyone talks about Salpi and Toro for what they have achieved, now is your chance to do so and bring joy to a football-mad nation. For a few days forget about your groups, joys or sorrows, put above all the feeling you have and even more like Greeks so that everyone talks about your own generation. Outdo the previous ones. You have nothing to envy from the rest, nor is anything done by chance. They used to say that about the conquest of the Euro and of course it is not true. Nobody gives anything away, to anyone. Everything is done through work. If you didn’t have talent you wouldn’t all be playing in such big teams and I want to help you bring that talent out here as well. I am also Greek, I have a Greek passport and I know you all more than anyone can imagine. It’s not a stranger talking to you.
I believe in you a lot, as a people you don’t get stuck and you don’t back down in difficult situations and I want to take advantage of this soul of yours and bring it out on the field as well. Speaking on behalf of the football players, Tasos Bakasetas stated the following: “We went through a difficult phase after the elimination, we did our self-criticism and we are looking forward. Through work we can improve and reach even higher.”
