Iván Archivaldo’s security chief is accused of fentanyl trafficking

A federal grand jury in Chicago indicted José Ángel Canobbio, “El Güerito,” head of security for Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, one of the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, for fentanyl trafficking.

The indictment establishes that Canobbio financed and directed an armed security group known as “Los Chimales,” which provided security for the Guzmán faction of the Sinaloa Cartel and participated in armed conflicts to help the Chapitos import drugs into the United States, according to with information from the American embassy.

The accusation maintains that Canobbio Inzunza conspired with the Guzmán Salazar brothers – known as “Los Chapitos” – and other people to manufacture cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and marijuana in Mexico and import the drugs to the United States for subsequent distribution.

The indictment alleges that Canobbio Inzunza financed and directed an armed security group known as “Los Chimales,” which provided security for the Guzmán faction of the Sinaloa cartel and participated in armed conflicts to help the Chapitos import drugs into the United States. Los Chapitos have been indicted on other charges in the United States in the last year, according to the US Department of Justice.

“Canobbio Inzunza is accused of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute controlled substances for illegal importation into the United States,” the Department of Justice report highlights.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after considering the US Sentencing Guidelines and other legal factors.

Canobbio Inzunza is believed to currently reside in Mexico and an arrest warrant has been issued for him in the United States.

The announcement of this indictment of the Los Chapitos lieutenant was led by Deputy Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice, Acting United States Attorney Morris Pasqual for the Northern District of Illinois and Special Agent Stacey Moy of the FBI San Diego Field Office.

According to the Department of Justice, this case is part of an Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation that identifies, disrupts and dismantles drug trafficking organizations and other criminal networks that threaten the United States.
