From September 18 to 28, 2024, the Vienna Music Theater Days are once again inviting you to a diverse program under the motto “It’s your choice, fish!” But behind this humorous allusion lies a deeper message: It is about the question of the extent to which we have the choice to influence global challenges.
A festival of diversity and reflection
With over 30 events at various venues in Vienna – including the Odeon, the Theater am Werk, the WUK, the Reaktor and the Schloss Neugebäude – the artistic directors Georg Steker and Thomas Cornelius Desi want to encourage the audience to step out of passivity and actively participate in social dialogues.
Opening with a multimedia apocalypse
The festival will be opened by the Ukrainian company Opera Aperta with the opera “GAIA 24. OPERA DEL MONDO”. This production addresses the destructive power of man and the reaction of nature, starting with the explosion of the Kakhovka dam. The multimedia opera uses the latest technology to create an apocalyptic atmosphere that deeply touches the audience.
Focus on sustainability and environmental awareness
Another highlight is “BREATHING THE OCEANS” by Thomas Cornelius Desi, which focuses on the mythical plastic continent “Atlantic Garbage Patch”. Through the combination of theater and interactive app, developed by Peter Koger, the audience is invited to actively participate in the production. This digital component enables participants to design sounds and content in real time and thus directly influence the performance.
Unlimited creativity and multisensory experiences
The Lithuanian production “THE URBAN TALE OF A HIPPO” creates a multi-sensory space in the WUK in which the boundaries between nature and city, animal and human, and past and future are blurred. The production uses light, sound, natural elements and movement to transport the audience to another world and sharpen their senses.
Interactive formats and innovative technology
The Vienna Music Theater Days are characterized by their interactive and technically innovative formats. In the late-night performance “MY VOICE MY VOID” by Marino Formenti, the idea of the voice as the most personal medium is questioned, while the ERRORTHEATER humorously addresses the search for inspiration in nature with “DER SIMMERRING”.
Georg Nussbaumer impresses with “WHITE-AND-WHITE ORGAN”, in which the audience is actively involved in the musical performance using wine bottles and their labels. Drinking, breathing and blowing create unique sound experiences that make the room resonate.
Pioneering projects and international networking
The Vienna Music Theatre Days are not just a festival, but a place for meeting and exchange. CLUB MOSAIK in Spitzer serves as the festival centre and offers artists and audiences the opportunity to come together in a relaxed atmosphere. The festival is committed to the further development of the music theatre genre and connects national and international artists.
Workshops and social reflection
In addition to the performances, the festival also offers workshops in which artists, cultural managers, activists and citizens can reflect on current social challenges. The AUSTRIAN MUSIC THEATRE DAY 2024 and the international joint venture “What’s next?” are important components of the program and promote creative exchange and the development of new projects.
Conclusion
The Vienna Music Theater Days 2024 offer a diverse and innovative program that not only entertains the audience, but also inspires them to think and act. With a mixture of traditional and modern music theater, interactive formats and technical innovations, the festival sets new standards and invites people to reflect on their own role in the world.
