It’s time for lace-up sandals

It’s time for moment with laces. Both tight around the ankle in the low version, and in the high version climbing up to below the knee. Among the most comfortable models, to be used from morning to evening, there are flat ones or ones with a mini, almost imperceptible heel.

Seen on the catwalks for spring-summer 2024 by Miu Miu, Ermanno Scervino, Onitsuka Tiger and Luisa Spagnoli, the weaves of the slave intrigue, capture attention and know how to transform even a simple outfit into a look cool.

Why are they called ‘slave’

The name recalls the models worn by slaves in Ancient Rome. However, they were also the shoes of gladiators who needed footwear that remained firmly on their feet.

Background

Lace-up sandals originated in ancient Egypt, and then spread to Greece and the Roman Empire. It seems that the pharaohs showed them off as sacred accessories: they allowed them to come into contact with the land over which they themselves reigned by divine will. In Greco-Roman civilization, in addition to slaves and gladiators, they also dressed the feet of soldiers who went into battle.

The consecration in fashion and in the star system dates back to the 1950s when the French actress Brigitte Bardot, subverting the canons of beauty and elegance, began to wear those sandals with nonchalance, both at the seaside and in the city. Even another film star of the last century, Audrey Hepburn, in 1953, made them become the accessory of desire in Roman holidays. In the film directed by William Wyler, Princess Anna, on a diplomatic visit to the Eternal City, decides to rebel against the strict protocol of the court by allowing herself to ride around on a Vespa with the photojournalist Joe, played by Gregory Peck, and taking the liberty of cutting her hair and buying a nice pair of gladiator sandals. That same year, Sophia Loren also succumbed to the charm of lace-up shoes.

Why “bare” toenails embarrass us (and how to manage nail polish)

Let’s take inspiration from the catwalks

The right match for the slave is with any dress that does not cover these must-have shoes, a mix of femininity and desire for summer. So go ahead for mini dresses, shorts and Bermuda shorts. But also slit skirts and caftans.
