It’s the world’s first flush toilet; 2400 years old!

Flushable toilets have been popular in our country for only a few decades. But flush toilets have been in use in the West for centuries. The world’s first flush toilet is believed to have been built for Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century. But a group of archaeologists has made a discovery that changes all these perceptions. They have found a 2400 year old flush toilet from China.

A system consisting of a toilet box and a pipe was discovered in the city of Xi’an. The toilet was also with the ruins of a palace that used to exist here. It is concluded that the pipe of the toilet installed inside the palace was connected to a pit outside the wall. Researchers have dubbed this construction, which is almost identical to today’s toilet systems, a luxury toilet.

Liu Rui, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, says this is the first ancient flush toilet to be found in China. The researchers concluded that such toilets were built for high-ranking officials from the Warring States period to the Qin Dynasty. There are also speculations that the currently discovered toilet may have been used by the kingdom’s rulers. But the top of the toilet is yet to be found.

Although it was a flush toilet, there were no systems to reach the flush tank in time like the toilets of today. The researchers also said that after each use by the administrators, the servants would pour water into the toilet bowl. This discovery is a good example of how important hygiene was in ancient China. The researchers are examining the soil samples collected from the toilet to conduct further studies in this regard.
