In 2022, digital terrestrial television will switch from broadcasting in the DVB-T standard to the DVB-T2 standard with the HEVC codec. Many Poles have older equipment at home, incompatible with the new solution, so when the signal is switched, they will not be able to watch terrestrial channels.

According to the National Media Institute, the problem affects over 2 million households. The need to replace the receivers came at a fatal moment: due to the disruption of the supply chain and the lack of components for production, shortages arose, pushing up prices. Used cars have already become more expensive than they cost for the new products in the showroom. A similar phenomenon should be expected on the TV market.

Switching the signal from the DVB-T standard to DVB-T2 / HEVC will start on March 28, 2022 and will last until June 27, 2022. The operation will consist of four stages. The plans are well known to specialists, but for many households the opportunity to learn about the change will be to look for the reasons why the “TV set stopped working”.

Preparations for the change lasted for years: the official obligation to support DVB-T2 / HEVC TV sets was carried out in Poland on December 1, 2019. Devices purchased earlier may or may not be able to watch digital terrestrial television in the new standard. According to the data provided by the Digital Poland Association and the National Media Institute, in 2016 only half of the TV sets sold complied with the new standard, and in 2020 almost all of them.
The solution to a potential problem is to replace the receiver or obtain an appropriate decoder. This will be necessary to continue watching digital terrestrial TV channels.
