It’s starting. The biggest company is laying off a huge number of people, the Czechs can’t believe it

After years of constant hiring, big companies have decided to make big layoffs. While in the case of giants like Meta or Apple it is not so much the Czech Republic, in the case of the giant online store Amazon it is different. It is one of the largest employers in the Czech Republic.

People fly to the sidewalk

More than 1.5 million employees work at Amazon worldwide. Until now, it was true that this behemoth was always recruiting new people. Even the Czech Republic has repeatedly been plastered with advertisements promising excellent working and wage conditions in its warehouses in our territory.

Representatives of this company announced everywhere that they were suffering from a shortage of manpower and would easily absorb much more than they were hiring. Anyone who then lost their job in the Czech Republic and wanted a new one almost immediately went to Amazon. And what’s more, in very decent condition. The employees of this company are generally satisfied with their salaries because they are above industry standards.

But that’s all coming to an end, and Amazon’s great boom is apparently over just now. The company announced the first major wave of layoffs, in which at least 10,000 people will lose their jobs. At the same time, management cautiously admits that this is just the beginning.

How will it be in the Czech Republic?

According to some experts, Amazon has fundamentally gone overboard with recruitment. Although the company has a high turnover, it is unable to generate almost any profit from it. Shareholders don’t like this and are pushing for cost reductions. And one of the biggest costs is the employees. This also ties into the large amount of automation that is happening at Amazon. Humans are no longer needed for some positions because they will be filled by robots.

It’s a big surprise to me that he should be fired. In any case, I would hate to lose such a job, because I simply can’t find a better one, says shopkeeper Milan, who works in the Amazon warehouse in Dobrovíz near Prague.

Whether the first wave of layoffs will also affect the Czech Republic is questionable. Perhaps it will affect local warehouses more so that employees will stop hiring. In the next stage, however, some restrictions on work can also be expected.
