It’s sad to start the year in England after breaking the new Corona case record

Jakarta

English celebrating the start of 2022 with bad news. On the first day of 2022, the UK sets a new case record Covid-19.

As reported by Reuters, Sunday (2/1/2022) the daily cases of Covid-19 on January 1 rose to 162,572 cases. An increase compared to the previous day, which was 160,276 cases.

As for the daily death toll on the first day of 2022, the UK recorded 154 cases. Slightly down from the end of December with 178 cases.

The UK’s Covid-19 case records usually also include Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, during the New Year’s weekend, the three regions were not included in the data due to differences in reporting schedules.

UK does not impose restrictions despite high cases

The UK, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the UK’s population, does not impose any restrictions. This is in contrast to what has been done by a number of regions in the United Kingdom such as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which impose restrictions, ranging from closing nightclubs, social distancing rules in pubs and limiting the number of people in a gathering.

Minister of Health English Sajid Javid said the new restrictions would only be introduced as an “absolute last resort”.

“Restriction of our freedom must be an absolute last resort,” wrote Javid in an article published in the Daily Mail newspaper, Saturday (1/1/2022).

“We must give ourselves the best chance to coexist with the virus and avoid future decisive action.”
