The Legion of Honor has just been awarded to French virologists. Astrid Vabret, virologist, head of the virology department of the CHU de Caen is part of the promotion of the 1st of the year which puts the caregivers in the spotlight, which concern two thirds of decorations. An important recognition for Astrid Vabret, “because it is a discipline little exposed“for all the work that has been done during this pandemic.
From tomorrow, the curfew will be brought forward to 6 p.m. in 15 departments in eastern France. For the virologist, it is hard to know if those two extra hours can be effective. “What is important to know is that the level of spread of the virus remains high, although controllable,” says Astrid Vabret, also referring to the impact in the coming days of the family reunions that have taken place for the end of year celebrations.
For the specialist, this extension of the curfew is “a decision that is wise, easily flexible. Obviously, everything is open to criticism and we can say to ourselves that the virus is circulating at any time of the day. But anything that can reduce its circulation has an impact, ”she says.
Some local elected officials called for tougher measures, such as local re-containment. For Astrid Vabret, it is important to trust political decisions. “The great difficulty in this marathon is to move forward in time and control the circulation of the virus.” For the virologist, “seen the heterogeneity of virus circulation on the territory, it seems to me relevant to act locally“, she confides, stressing that our lives would certainly be difficult, but that would allow them to better adapt to the virus.
