The producers of James Bond are currently at a crossroads that seems difficult to resolve. His saga has changed with each actor quite noticeably, going from a cruder tone to a more casual and even charmingly clownish tone. Now it would theoretically touch on the second, but the impact of the stage with Daniel Craig may have changed the franchise irrevocably.
With better and worse films, the most recent version of 007 has opted for a more continuous narrative, instead of the individual adventures that have been tradition. A way to try to give a more mature aura to the character, trying to successfully connect it to the current blockbuster. His best moment, of course, combined that contemporary air with the desire to pay tribute to his own legacy, as shown in ‘Skyfall’.
Present and past
With Sam Mendes at the helm, being a quite unexpected choice at the time, modernity and old school came together for the film released just on the 50th anniversary of the release of James Bond as a film franchise. The result is one of the best films of the entire saga, and one of the best action films of this centuryavailable for watch for free on RTVE Play for a limited time until this Sunday the 26th (also available on Amazon Prime Video).
The infallibility of Bond and MI6 is called into question after a mission goes wrong. The British government imposes greater scrutiny on the secret service and calls into question the viability of its head M (Judi Dench). As if that were not enough, episodes from her past will return to torment her in the form of one of the most imposing villains those the intelligence agency has faced: Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem, exultant).
The film is covered with a reflective layer on Bond’s story, which becomes supratext at the moment where it explores his family past and was on the verge of being directly exploited with a possible signing of Sean Connery (cleverly discarded, it would have been quite distracting) . Still, his way of exploring new models of espionage and his role in eras of cyberattack and global connection they recontextualize 007 and its need in modern cinema.
‘Skyfall’: fireworks
Although to modernize the entire visual aspect that Mendes displays thanks to the excellent director of photography Roger Deakins. Together they manage to make ‘Skyfall’ the most beautiful film in all aspects of Bond, with scenes of incredible finishing. There is not a single sequence without a shot that is orgasmic for fans of beautiful photography.
Mendes is surprising, because even after having made ‘Jarhead, hell awaits’ his career was not exactly action and fireworks. Here he seems touched by the same wand that led him to later make the stunning ‘1917’ (and that, for some reason, seems to have completely passed him by when making ‘Spectre’). It even has a song on par with the best Bond themes, with Adele giving a powerful and sober performance worthy of the Oscar she won. Although a few more statuettes would not have been completely deserving.
